Structural Steel Quality Technician

Job Type: Contract-to-Hire
Shift: 1st Shift
Starting Pay: $32.00/hour, with higher pay possible based on experience

Position Summary

We are looking for a Quality Control Inspector with structural steel fabrication experience to monitor workmanship, materials, welding, and coatings for compliance with project requirements and industry standards.

This is a hands-on shop-floor position in an active, non-climate-controlled manufacturing environment. The role involves limited office work and regular standing, walking, and material inspections.

Responsibilities

What You'll Do

  • Inspect structural steel and fabricated components for quality and specification compliance.
  • Verify work meets AWS D1.1, AWS D1.5, AISC, and applicable industry standards.
  • Check incoming materials, parts, and consumables for conformance.
  • Record inspection results and maintain quality documentation and logs.
  • Use and maintain inspection equipment and welding-related tools.
  • Calibrate welding equipment and quality inspection tools as needed.
  • Assist with welder qualification testing and certification.
  • Support training involving welding, fitting, and quality requirements.
  • Maintain drawing control and other quality processes.
  • Work with production and management to identify and correct quality issues.
  • Participate in continuous improvement and training activities.
  • Promote safe work practices throughout the facility.
  • Work Environment

  • Primarily shop-floor based with limited office work
  • Non-climate-controlled manufacturing facility
  • Regular standing, walking, and inspection of materials
  • Exposure to varying temperatures
  • Requirements

    Requirements

  • 2+ years of structural steel fabrication experience
  • Quality control, inspection, or manufacturing experience
  • Working knowledge of AWS D1.1, AWS D1.5, and AISC
  • Ability to read fabrication drawings and specifications
  • Experience using inspection tools such as:
    • Fillet weld gauges
    • V-WAC gauges
    • Squares
    • Tape measures
    • Other standard inspection equipment
    • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
    • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality and safety
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Current Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification
  • Experience with Ultrasonic Testing (UT), Magnetic Particle Testing (MT), or Penetrant Testing (PT)
  • Certifications related to structural steel fabrication, bolting, coatings, or welding inspection
  • Previous steel manufacturing experience
