Structural Steel Shop Lead

Location: Cocoa Beach, FL
Job Type: Contract-to-Hire
Starting Pay: $30/hour, with higher pay available based on experience

Position Overview

Seeking an experienced shop lead to coordinate structural steel fabrication activities and support day-to-day production. This hands-on position guides fitters, welders, and fabrication personnel while helping keep work on schedule, meeting quality requirements, and maintaining a safe shop.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate daily fabrication activities with shop leadership to meet production and delivery targets.
  • Lead fitters, welders, and other fabrication employees during shop operations.
  • Assign work and balance workloads based on production priorities.
  • Provide hands-on guidance with fit-up, welding, layout, and blueprint interpretation.
  • Troubleshoot fabrication and production problems.
  • Monitor workflow and communicate production issues or schedule changes to leadership.
  • Reinforce safety requirements, quality expectations, and shop procedures.
  • Coordinate with maintenance personnel to minimize equipment downtime.
  • Maintain an organized, clean, and safe work area.
  • Assist with employee onboarding, training, and development.
  • Work with Quality Control to ensure fabricated steel meets required standards.
  • Assist with dimensional measurements, inspections, and quality documentation.
  • Perform other shop leadership responsibilities as needed.
  • Requirements

    Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience leading or supervising structural steel fabrication teams.
  • Strong experience with welding, fit-up, layout, and structural steel fabrication.
  • Experience operating or working with CNC fabrication equipment and shop machinery.
  • Ability to read and interpret fabrication drawings and blueprints.
  • Understanding of shop safety, quality requirements, and production workflows.
  • Tekla EPM/GO experience preferred.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Willingness to work overtime, weekends, or adjusted schedules when production requires.
