Structural Steel Layout & Fit-Up Fitter

Location: Richmond, VA
Job Type: Full-Time | Contract-to-Hire
Shifts: 1st & 2nd Shift
Pay: Up to $28/hour, based on experience
2nd Shift Differential: +$3/hour

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced Structural Steel Fitter to prepare and fit steel components for fabrication. This position requires strong layout and measurement skills, the ability to work from shop drawings, and experience positioning and aligning structural steel prior to welding.

Responsibilities

What You'll Do

  • Review shop drawings, blueprints, and fabrication details to determine proper assembly and placement.
  • Perform layout and mark steel components according to required dimensions.
  • Measure, position, and secure structural steel pieces for fabrication.
  • Complete fit-up and alignment of steel components before welding.
  • Prepare and position parts for welding and final assembly.
  • Set up and operate fabrication equipment, including a track torch.
  • Monitor dimensions and component placement throughout the fabrication process.
  • Inspect completed fit-ups for proper measurements, alignment, and workmanship.
  • Identify dimensional or alignment problems and make necessary corrections.
  • Coordinate with supervisors and other shop employees to maintain production schedules.
  • Keep tools, materials, and work areas organized.
  • Follow all applicable safety requirements and shop procedures.
  • Requirements

    Qualifications

  • Previous experience in structural steel fitting, layout, or fabrication.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, shop drawings, and technical drawings.
  • Hands-on experience with steel positioning, fit-up, alignment, and assembly.
  • Ability to set up and operate a track torch.
  • Familiarity with welding processes, fabrication equipment, and common shop tools.
  • Strong measuring skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to consistently produce accurate, quality work.
  • Comfortable working in a production-focused fabrication environment.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a fabrication team.
  • Commitment to workplace safety and maintaining an organized work area.
  • AWS or other welding certifications are a plus.
