Job Description

Your Role

You’ve got a few years of building backend services under your belt, and you’re ready to own real features on systems that customers depend on every day.

We’re looking for a mid-level Backend Engineer to join our Engineering team and help us ship high-quality software, faster. Reporting to the Engineering Manager, you’ll work on the core systems behind the Megaport platform — the APIs and services that turn a click in the Portal into provisioned connectivity between data centers on opposite sides of the world.

Our main codebase is a mixture of Java and Kotlin using the Spring Boot framework, and we are migrating fully to Kotlin over time. You don’t need Kotlin on day one, but you’ll be writing it before long.

You'll work alongside a skilled, driven team, and have genuine room to shape how we solve problems. Our backend engineers also run a dedicated mentoring program, so you'll have someone in your corner as you grow.

Responsibilities

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Design, build and ship backend services and APIs, from an ambiguous problem through to tested, maintainable code in production.
  • Work in a modern JVM stack including Java, Kotlin, Spring Boot, Postgres, RabbitMQ and Redis, and help shape how we use it.
  • Ship to a Kubernetes and AWS platform where GitHub Actions handle the heavy lifting, so you spend your time on the product rather than on infrastructure.
  • Turn business requirements into technical solutions, and speak up when a requirement doesn't quite add up. We'd rather you asked why before how.
  • Collaborate with engineers, product, and stakeholders across the business to build systems that stay reliable, secure and fast as we grow.
  • Write JUnit and Kotest tests that let us ship with confidence, and take part in code review as both author and reviewer.
  • Help improve our architecture, patterns and processes, and keep our technical debt in check to ensure the codebase remains flexible and well-maintained.
  • What We Are Looking For

We care as much about how you think and work as what you already know. The technical bar matters, but so does curiosity, clear communication, and the drive to own your work.

    You'll thrive here if you:

  • Have a few years building backend services in Java or Kotlin.
  • Are comfortable working with Spring, and have a sense of what it's doing for you.
  • Know your way around relational databases and can model data with an eye on how it'll be queried.
  • Communicate clearly — you can explain a technical trade-off to an engineer and to a non-engineer, and you listen as well as you talk.
  • Like solving problems, and can think critically about them. You dig into the why, weigh options, and aren't satisfied with "it works" when it could be right.
  • Take ownership — you're keen to pick up a problem, run with it, and see it through.
  • Nice to have (or happy to help you learn):
  • Kotlin, or an appetite for picking it up.
  • Experience with Go or Terraform. We maintain our own Terraform Provider, and we’re upskilling the team to build on it.
  • Experience with ORMs like Hibernate, and a sense of when not to reach for one.
  • Knowledge of the major cloud providers’ products or APIs. We integrate directly with AWS, Azure and GCP to provision customer connectivity.
  • An interest in networking — IP routing, MPLS, or just how the internet actually fits together.
  • What We Offer

  • Flexible working environment — Brisbane-based with one or two days a week in the office, or fully remote anywhere in Australia with good overlap with east-coast hours
  • Generous leave plans — including parental leave, birthday leave, and a purchased annual leave program
  • Health and wellness support — through a wellness allowance and employee wellbeing initiatives
  • Comprehensive learning support — generous study and training allowance plus paid study leave
  • Creative, modern workspaces — designed to inspire when you're not working remotely, plus access to coworking spaces via our global WeWork membership if you work remotely, but like to get out of the house sometimes
  • Motivated, inclusive team — work alongside industry experts and fresh talent
  • Recognition programs — celebrate achievements with our Legend and Kudos awards
