In this role, you will design and implement processes and tools for safety-critical software development, collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure compliance with high safety standards.
Job Description
The Software Systems Engineering team is responsible for defining SW development processes and ensuring that all safety-critical software meets a high safety bar for production vehicles.
In this role, you will design and implement methodologies, tools, and processes for safety-critical software that will revolutionize transportation in the 21st century. Borrowing principles from avionics, automotive, and other safety-critical industries, you will work with software engineers throughout the Zoox software org, ranging from state-of-the-art AI Autonomy software, all the way to highly-critical RTOS and middleware components. You will develop and maintain tools that help cross-functional teams build software adhering to a High Assurance Process, working closely with CI tools and infrastructure to meet the team's business goals. Partnering with team leads, you will define delivery milestones, automate necessary tooling, and report on relevant business metrics — while contributing to code reviews and incident postmortems to ensure the long-term stability and reliability of the software system.
Responsibilities
In this role, you will:
- Be the go-to owner for the entire SSE pipeline ecosystem — from ClangTidy, ASAN/TSAN/Harden, and FBInfer — keeping every pipeline running smoothly across weekly, nightly, and CI so the rest of the org can trust the results.
- Take pipelines from prototypes to fully deployed, CI-enforced systems across branches, shaping how "production-grade" looks for stability tooling at Zoox.
- Turn raw issue data into dashboards and KPIs that tell a story — giving leadership and engineering teams a clear, real-time pulse on pipeline health and software quality trends.
- Play detective when things break — root-causing gnarly cross-platform and determinism, building the instrumentation and tooling to crack them.
- Help shape what's next for the pipeline suite — pitching in on new checker rollouts, testing strategy, and define how SSE scales its infrastructure
Requirements
Qualifications:
- Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in computer science, electrical engineering, robotics, aerospace, or related fields and 7+ years of experience working on large code bases
- Experience developing in Bazel/Python, setting up backend infrastructure (databases, web servers, shell scripts, etc.), and interfacing with software written in C++ and Python.
- Experienced in drafting system design diagrams and documentation for customer communication and long-term maintenance
- Comfortable to whip up quick scripts to automate tasks, such as generating metrics, establishing traceability, etc, when necessary.
- Deep experience in enterprise-scale deployment practices and issues
