Job Description

The Role:
Mergermarket, the leading provider of news and analysis on mergers & acquisitions and equity capital markets, is looking to hire a full-time senior reporter to cover Chinese government policy and regulatory developments, with a focus on merger control, especially antitrust reviews of large, publicly traded companies.
The beat will also require coverage of foreign direct investment, outbound investment, and national security review processes. This is an exciting opportunity to cover global high-profile transactions. Developing a strong contact book of domestic and international sources will be essential for the reporter, through calls and attending both domestic and international events.
The role will be based in Beijing or Shanghai, and require domestic and international travel.
As part of the global M&A team, they will work closely with our Dealreporter and PaRR publication reporters around the world to break market-moving scoops and deliver exclusive insights to our audience. The successful candidate must also be a collaborative team player, as the role involves regular coordination and close collaboration with journalists across the globe. 

Responsibilities

  • The ideal candidate will be a strong investigative journalist who is able to conduct interviews in person and on calls and can quickly grasp complex issues, with a keen eye for detail.
  • The candidate should be persistent and resourceful, with a strong competitive drive to break news and a deep understanding of how policy and regulatory developments affect businesses and markets.
  • Requirements

    Required Skills, Qualifications and Experience:

  • 3+ years of experience in financial or legal reporting, preferably covering mainland China 
  • Fluency in Mandarin and the ability to cultivate and maintain sources in Chinese.
  • Excellent English writing skills, with the ability to produce clear, accurate, and compelling copy.
  • Sophisticated understanding of competition policy to explain the significance of deal review developments
  • Ability to thrive under deadline pressure while also delivering in-depth analytical and commentary-driven features
