CNC Machine Operator – Structural Steel, 2nd Shift

Location: Richmond, VA
Job Type: Contract to Hire
Schedule: 2nd Shift
Pay: Starting at $24/hour + $3/hour second-shift differential; higher starting rates may be available based on experience.

Position Overview

We are hiring an experienced CNC Machine Operator to process structural steel components in a heavy manufacturing environment. This position involves machine setup and operation, material handling, dimensional inspection, basic CNC adjustments, and equipment troubleshooting.

The right candidate is mechanically inclined, detail-oriented, and comfortable working from structural steel drawings and production specifications.

Responsibilities

What You’ll Do

  • Set up and operate CNC equipment, including plasma cutters, beam drill lines, and angle lines.
  • Review shop drawings, blueprints, and work orders to determine dimensions, specifications, and production requirements.
  • Use overhead cranes and rigging equipment to safely position and secure steel beams, plates, and other materials.
  • Monitor CNC equipment during production and make adjustments to maintain accuracy and product quality.
  • Check finished work using tape measures, calipers, squares, and other precision measuring tools.
  • Make basic programming edits and machine adjustments for varying material sizes and thicknesses.
  • Perform routine CNC equipment maintenance and troubleshoot operating issues.
  • Follow OSHA requirements and shop safety procedures.
  • Keep the work area clean, organized, and safe.
  • Work independently while coordinating effectively with the production team.

Requirements

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED required; technical or trade school training preferred.
  • 2+ years of CNC machine operation experience in structural steel fabrication or heavy manufacturing.
  • Ability to read and understand structural steel shop drawings.
  • Experience with precision measurement tools.
  • Familiarity with overhead cranes, forklifts, and rigging preferred.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced production environment.
